Index of value of use of wildlife in communities of the Araya Peninsula, Sucre State, Venezuela
2015  Revista Eletronica Conocimiento Libre y Licenciamiento (11): 93-102

In Venezuelan legal terminology, wildlife comprises the four Classes of terrestrial vertebrates (Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia). In order to collect information of the different uses that the inhabitants of the rural communities of Guarapo and Chacopata give to the wildlife in this region, 169 surveys were applied. It is established by applying the index of use value (IVU) the consumption preference that the inhabitants of both communities have with relation to the groups of species of the wild fauna of this region. The results of this investigation show the use that the inhabitants of the studied communities give to 43 species of wild fauna (birds with 21 species, followed by mammals with 14 species, reptiles with 6 species and amphibians with 2 species.), Of these, four (04) are threatened by extinction, with three (03) species being found endangered (EN), which are: _Amazona barbadensis_, _Leopardus_ _wiedii_ and _Odocoileus virginianus_ and as a vulnerable species (VU) _Leopardus pardalis_. The use value index (UTI) was a tool that allowed us to know the faunal species where the surveyed population exerts the greatest pressure, since certain species are being extracted, either because of their size, their meat, among others, and may reach to cause declines in their populations and therefore an alteration in the ecological balance of the area studied. The preference of reptile consumption was determined, very particularly for _Iguana iguana _and _Chelonoidis carbonaria_, with birds and mammals having a lower use value. This work of this research will serve as the basis for the design of a strategy for the sustainable use and management of wildlife in the Araya peninsula, Sucre state, Venezuela.
