Spatial ecology of the Scottish wildcat
  Full Book

We reviewed the available literature on the European wildcat _Felis silvestris silvestris_ and the domestic cat _F. s. catus_. The behavioural ecology of the two subspecies is similar. Key differences are that the domestic cat is more gregarious and more likely to make use of human food sources. While habitat preferences were comparable, there was some evidence that the wildcat displays a greater preference for forested habitat and the domestic cat a greater preference for grassland habitat. We used trail camera surveys to target live-trapping of wild-living cats in Northern Scotland during 2013 and 2014. Nineteen wild-living cats were captured and GPS weak-link collars were attached to 16. We recovered eight of the GPS collars before VHF beacon failure. We attached GPS collars to a further seven domestic house cats.
