Interspecific competition between the wild cat (_Felis silvestris_) and other small carnivores
2018  Full Book

Interspecific competition can be a key factor for the distribution and abundance of many species. The small carnivores are a guild with great potential for this type of competition, resulting in a fragile coexistence, with the need to reduce their overlap in temporal and spatial axes. Due to low abundance and the difficulty _in situ _observation, the distribution and conservation of the wildcat (_Felis silvestris_) in Catalonia is poorly know, as well as the potential factors that may affect it, such as, for example, competitive biological interactions with other species of carnivorous. To determine how important these interactions are for the distribution and conservation of _Felis silvestris_, by means of camera traps, we assessed the spatial and temporal distribution, as well as the frequency of small carnivore guild present in the Osona regi¢n. In this study area, the most representative species are the red fox (_Vulpes vulpes), _the badger _(Meles meles), _the common genet _(Genetta genetta), _the wildcat _(Felis silvestris), _the beech marten _(Martes foina), _the pine marten _(Martes martes), _as well as the domestic cat (_Felis catus)_, which can also be seen among the other wild carnivores.
