Factors of mesocarnivore coexistence in national parks in a mediterranean environment
2016  Book Chapter

The communities of Iberian carnivores usually consist of medium-size species ("mesocarnivores"), with close ecological requirements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ecological factors (trophic, spatial and temporal segregations) allowing the coexistence of mesocarnivores in Mediterranean environments. Protocols based on non-invasive methods (photo-trapping) were optimized for monitoring mesocarnivore communities in two National Parks: Cabaneros and Monfrague. A minimum of 30 cameras active during 10 days (Monfrague) or 20 days (Cabaneros) were required to detect all the occurring species. A scattered arrangement of the cameras (separated 1.5 km) revealed higher effectiveness than a clumped arrangement (1 km). Both the combination lynx urine-valerian extract and chicken bait increased the detectability of the mesocarnivores in the cameras, except the chicken bait for the wildcat (_Felis silvestris silvestris_).
