Snow leopards often kill livestock, which has led to the proposition that livestock, by providing an alternate food source, may be benefitting snow leopards. I tested this idea by examining the relative use of habitats by snow leopards along a gradient of livestock and wild ungulate densities. I found that in the absence of direct persecution, livestock grazing is compatible with snow leopard conservation at low stocking density, where rangelands still have an adequate abundance of wild ungulates. However, the use of habitats by snow leopards declines beyond a threshold of livestock stocking density |
