_Panthera onca_ conservation in Brazil: science and social conflicts | |
2022 Full Book | |
This thesis investigates the relationship between scientific research and strategies for the conservation of the largest feline in the Americas, the emblematic jaguar. This research prioritized the investigation of strategies aimed at reducing the conflict between humans and jaguars, taking as a case study three conservation projects currently in three biomes in Brazil: Pantanal, Atlantic Forest and Caatinga. Therefore, a systematic literature review was carried out, which allowed the identification of the main trends in the research. The results indicated a significant increase in scientific production on Panthera onca throughout the sample period (1970-2018), especially in relation to ecology and conservation . Brazil was the main area of study of these researches. The research on the theme of the conflict between jaguars and humans, initially, was focused on the ecological aspects of cattle predation (the impact of cattle predation and its relationship with environmental variables) and the methods used responded to this approach. Over the years, social methods have gained ground in articles dealing with the human dimensions of conflict, which have brought new concepts and recommendations aimed at interventions in the communities directly involved with jaguars. The projects described in this article (Projeto On‡as do Igua‡u, Programa Amigos da On‡a and Fazenda Jofre Velho) revealed that the strategies used to mitigate the conflict between humans and jaguars are in line with the results and proposed recommendations by scientific literature, especially in its most recent advances in the social field. The research also showed that ethical and emotional values were the most frequently cited by researchers as a motivation for them to continue working in the conservation of the jaguar. The theoretical foundations cited showed that the research and conservation of the species was balanced between references from the field of social and ecological research. |
