Peign‚, S.
_Proailurus_, one of the oldest Felidae (Carnivora) from Eurasia: systematics and evolution
1999  Bulletin de la Soci‚tŠ d'Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse (135 ): 125-134

_Proailurus_ is the largest feliform predator of its time. A systematic review of this genus allows to distinguish 3 species, 2 being created in this contribution: _P. bourbonnensis and P. major._ This is the relative size more than the anatomical features which is the main difference between them. A morphological and cladistic analyses using dental and front skull features suggest a sister-group relationships between _Proailurus_ and _Stenogale_ rather than between _Proailurus_ and _Haplogale_ as previously thought. Such a hypothesis is reinforced by recent works based on the auditory region of those genera.
