Impact of agriculture and livestock on the water quality of the drinking water system of the community of El Capul¡, Province of Carchi

The research was conducted on the slopes of the three catchments of drinking water system of the community of El Capul¡, Cant¢n Mont£far, Province of Carchi, during the period of September 2014 to May 2016. The overall objective was to evaluate the incidence of agriculture and livestock on water quality of the drinking water community. A diagnosis of the current situation was conducted to determine the intensity of agricultural activities in the area of influence of the catchment areas by collecting cadastral information GAD of Canton Montufar and vaccination data provided by the FMD System (SIFAE). The quality of drinking water was determined by conducting physical and chemical analyzes of water samples watersheds, catchments and treatment plant. The results determined that the area of influence of sources of surface water intakes on top of the sub Cuenca of the river Huaquer is itself influenced by the increase of the agricultural frontier; whereas, in lower livestock activity it is affecting water quality for human consumption of the system under study. The different agricultural activities recorded in the areas of influence georeferenced by software: Microsoft Excel, Arc Gis 10.2 and AutoCAD 2015. Through participatory methodology results are socialized, stressing the importance of protecting water sources and environmental obligations as farmers and as community. Based on information found, it constituted a proposal for the construction of a sand trap, which will reduce water turbidity in the source collection was built; moreover, the implementation of a water purification system from ion exchange columns to be placed in treatment plant in order to remove the content of nitrite, nitrate and phosphate in the three existing system uptakes contemplated.
