Karanth, K.U.
Predator-prey relationships among the large mammals of Nagarahole National Park (India)
1993  Full Book

There is increasing appreciation of the fact that all the three aspects of predator management - preservation, sustained yield hunting, and predator damage control - need to be based on sound knowledge of their behavior and ecology. Considering the diversity of predator-prey communities in India, it becomes obvious that studies of interactions within them have to be location-specific, at least at the level of biotic provinces and biomes, because of variables such as prey species, prey density, competing predator species, and habitat characteristics. An examination of the predator-prey assemblages in different biotic provinces suggests that a predator community consisting of tiger, leopard and dhole, is at the top of the food chain in 6 out of 8 biogeographic zones, and in 16 out of 20 biotic provinces. The present study, which focuses on these three predators and their interactions with the principal prey species, was carried out in Nagarahole National Park (in Biotic province 5B), in Karnataka State during 1989-1991.
