Studies on the influence of vegetation types and prey composition on the feeding ecology of tiger, leopard and wild dog in Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, Tamilnadu, India | |
2006 Full Book | |
The present investigation has been planned to study the feeding ecology of the three carnivores namely tiger, leopard and wild dog in the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park (IGWS&NP) with the following objectives: 1. to evaluate the composition of vegetation in the five habitats namely Evergreen, Moist deciduous, Dry deciduous, Thorn and Grassland habitats of IGWS&NP during 2001-2004, 2. to estimate the prey species density and diversity in the above habitat types during the study period, 3. to study the feeding ecology of large carnivores (Tiger, leopard and wild dog) in different habitats and in different seasons by using the method scat analysis, 4. to evaluate the feasibility of using scats or scrapes of large carnivores as indicators of relative abundance of large carnivores. This method, if found reliable, will help in rapid survey and analysis of relative abundance of large carnivores in different habitats, 5. to determine the prey selection by the large carnivores in relation to the vegetation types and prey types, 6. to suggest management measures for the conservation of large carnivores in protected areas. |
