Indian Desert Cat Birth Makes History
1989  International Zoo News (215): 12-13

The birth of Noah, a male Indian desert cat (Felis silvestris ornate), at the Cincinnati Zoo made history both as the first interspecies birth of any cat and as the first birth of an exotic cat resulting from in vitro fertilization (IVF). With support from Dr. Betsy Dresser, Director of Research at the Cincinnati Zoo Center for Reproduction of endangered Wildlife (CREW), and Dr. Edward Maruska, Executive Director of the Cincinnati Zoo, Dr. Earle Pope, head of CREW's Animal Conservation Division, developed the IVF technique that brought Noah into the world. This technique, a method of fertilizing and culturing embryos outside the body in a culture dish, was adapted from the similar technology used for human test-tube babies.
