Gauto, R.
Private Conservation Programs in Paraguay
1989  Conservation Biology (3): 120-120

In January, 1988, a group of concerned private citizens took the initiative of forming a nonprofit conservation association with the encouragement of the Nature Conservancy. The mission of the association is to conserve the natural biodiversity of Paraguay and to promote sustainable development of resources. The name of the association, Fundacion Mois‚s Bertoni para la Conservacion de la Naturaleza (the Moises Bertoni Foundation for the Conservation of Nature), was chosen to honor a world-renowned Swiss-Paraguayan naturalist. A board of directors has been selected and an executive director named. The Fundacion began operations in June 1988, coincident with the observation of "Environment Week" in Paraguay. Financial assistance has been obtained from international foundations and conservation donors. The Fundacion has begun work with the Nature Conservancy and other agencies on its first project, the establishment of a new national park or equivalent preserve (e.g., a biosphere preserve) in eastern Paraguay.
