Gutleb, B.
Some comments upon leopard (Panthera pardus) in northern Iran
  Manuscript

According to Firouz (1974) leopard is widespread in northern Iran and can be found in almost all protected Area or National Parks of the region. Close to Armenia leopards can be found in Lake Orumieh NP (2), Marakan PA (Protected area, 14) and Kiamaki PA (48). Distribution of leopard in Iran after Tajbakhsh (1995) and Ziaie (1996), black zone - most likely distribution, at least only there vital population (Gutleb). The main food is Ibex but also Wild sheep and Wild boar. The distribution seems to be related to the distribution of Ibex (Ziaie 1996, Harrington 1977). The leopard also eats fox, dogs, cows, sheep and horses. The big increase of Wild boar all over Iran might be a positive factor for the leopard, and maybe also one reason for the increase of leopards in the eastern Elburz. In Golestan National Park and surrounding his number has tripled since late 70s to about 100 (National Park with about 1,000 kmę)(Hassan et al. 1994). In 1975 a big leopard was shot in Iranian Azarbaijan, similar to the biggest shot in Iran in 1973 (almost 90kg, south of Gorgan, fig.3)(Tajbakhsh 1995).
