Bothma, J.du P.
The Leopard (Panthera pardus) in South Africa
1989  Book Chapter

This document contains a short overview of the status and distribution of the leopard in South Africa. Population numbers and the leopard's habitat requirements and spatial distribution are described. The major threats to the species are identified: Lack of large enough protected areas and conflicts with livestock owners. The possibility of allowing limited sustained harvest of the leopard population is discussed as a means of reducing human-leopard conflicts. Establishment of a special protected area for the conservation of leopards is considered for the Cape Province.
