Worldwide the leopard is considered a threatened species, and in North Africa is on the verge of extinction. Following studies in Northern Africa, Graham Drucker has ascertained that the Barbary leopard is now almost certainly restricted to Morocco. The leopard became extinct in Tunisia in the 1960s and the last sightings in Algeria were in the El Kala region on the Mediterranean coast (the infrequent sightings in the extreme south, the Hoggar, are believed to be migrant subspp.
