Comments on conservation and status of the Jaguar in south America
1986  Full Book

Jaguar seem to be present in most Amazonian rainforest regions. But of many areas visited, jaguar were only common in one: Parque Nacional Manu. By "common" I mean that fresh jaguar sign could be encountered at least once a week, on average, within an area of 5 km2 or less. In regions other than Manu Park, fresh jaguar sign were seen every few weeks to every few months. There is a simple method to evaluate the jaguar population in a given area. Months of work may not produce a solid estimate of density. There is no easy way to calculate a population from a few tracks.
