Strategies for saving the far eastern leopard in Russia
1998  Full Book

During an international conference held in Vladivostok in 1996, a group of specialists discussed the status of the Far Eastern leopard and devised a comprehensive conservation plan to ensure the survival of the Far Eastern leopard in the wild. This document is a draft approved by the Russian government, which refers to the recovery plan developed during the international conference. It constitutes the base for the development of the National Strategy for Conservation of the Far Eastern Leopard in Russia (Pikunov et al. 1999). The plan includes a detailed status report with an analysis of threats. Goals and objectives for the survival of a self-sustaining leopard population in its natural habitat are formulated. Seven objectives of leopard protection are identified: 1) First steps 2) Nature use in leopard habitat 3) Establishment of a network of protected areas 4) Captive breeding 5) Reintroduction 6) Monitoring of leopard numbers and habitat conditions 7) Environmental education and public awareness.
