Panthera pardus (Linnaeus, 1758:41) was first named and described scientifically by Linneaeus from Egypt from 'the Valley of the Nile'. It was once distributed in all of Africa except the Sahara and across Asia from eastern Turkey through southern Russia to Korea, all of southern Asia as well as Sri Lanka and the Island of Java and the Kangean Islands in Indonesia. In Arabia the leopard inhabitated the montane periphery of the Hijaz, the Asir, Yemen, Hadramawt, Dhofar and the mountains of Oman and the UAE. |
