Approaches to reducing large predator and human conflicts
2001  Conference Proceeding

Compensation for damages is one the most crucial issues in the conflict between large predators and humans. There are two possible solutions to this problem; 1) to provide a damage payment to a farmer for losses incurred from a wild animal's attack; or, 2) make no compensation but simply be aware of the attacks. Research conducted in Russia shows that almost 60% of those people whose livestock has been killed want their satisfaction in the form of a tiger or leopard skin. The remaining 40% prefer to receive monetary compensation. Unfortunately, in Russia, as a rule, most conflicts are only noted, and in the best of cases is there an attempt to scare the predator off before new attacks occur. The absence of any form of government policy to compensate for losses has an extremely destructive impact on preserving large predator populations.
