Wildcat recovery programme in Scotland, Wildcat survey 1983-1987
1993  Conference Proceeding

The current distribution of wildcats in Scotland was surveyed between 1983 and 1987. The results were compared with historic records to assess temporal changes in wildcat distribution. This information suggests a considerable expansion in the area occupied by wildcat populations in 1988 from the estimated minimum "relict" population of 1915. Scottish National Heritage have initiated a Recovery Programme to establish the genetic and morphological basis of wild cat populations in Scotland and to quantify the threat posed by hybridisation. This information will enable effective conservation management decisions to be made.
