A strategy for cheetah conservation in Africa
1983 Conference Proceeding
This paper addresses the problems experienced in the reintroduction of cheetah into Pilanesberg Game Reserve. To conserve declining cheetah populations animals from Namibia were reintroduced. However, due to the lack of competition by other predators, cheetah populations grew substancially in size and predation impact on rare antelopes became so excessive, that cheetah had to be removed. In this document the status and trend of cheetah populations are briefly discussed, then recent and current efforts at cheetah conservation are examined. Finally, what are considered realistic tactics for future cheetah conservation are suggested. |
