Rutting behaviour in fallow deer was studied during two consecutive seasons on the island of ™land in the Baltic. The group size increased gradually during the pre-rut phase. During the same time most of the activity of the territorial bucks was devoted to establish the territory by means of fights, visual, acoustic and olfactory markings. Considerable change in group size and composition was recorded when the rutting season changed from its preliminary phase to the main rut. The territorial buck was during the main rut very active in defending his territory center, which is called rutting stand, and in collecting and keeping a number of does on the stand.
