(unknown) | |
The leopard has the widest range of all the extent Felidae. It lives in habitats as diverse as tropical forests and deserts. This requires great adaptibility, a characteristic of all cats. The leopard has been an integral component of the South African fauna for a long time. Fossil examples of a _Panthera pardus_, which was larger than the extent one, are dated to 1.8 to 1.0 million years ago, when it lives alongside the dirk-toothed cat _Megantereon cultridens_ and the hunting hyaena _Chasmaporthetes nitidula_ at the present Swartkrans fossil site. |
