The large mammals of southern Africa: late pliocene to recent

This paper aims to summarize the known history of large mammals in southern Africa, from the late Pliocene, roughly 3.5 million years (Myr) ago, to the recent past. A large mammal is defined as one in which adults weigh at least 0.75 kg.
