Named from the Arabic word meaning desert or wilderness, the Sahara is the world's grandest and most awe-inspiring desert. Much of it probably man-made, most of recent origin, it has long been intimately related with mankind. It has witnessed bitter warfare throughout the ages and has invoked both the worst and the best in human nature.
