Kipling, L.
Under a pipal tree
1980  Book Chapter

The tiger is the spirit of the jungle. Even his distant roar, or an alarm call from some startled animal announcing his arrival, changes the atmosphere. Man, too, has been greatly moved by his powerful presence and has inevitably been affected by the tension he creates. Not surprisingly, legends, beliefs, and folk tales have grown up around the tiger, just as he has been portrayed in the art and literature of all those who have been portrayed in the art and literature of all those who have lived near enough to hear him, to see his victims, or to have been his prey.
