Eaton, R.L.
The evolution of sociality in the Felidae
1974  Conference Proceeding

Among larger carnivores, four canids - dhole, bush dog, hunting dog and wolf - one felid, the lion, and one hyenid, the spotted hyena, are highly social. The fundamental foraging strategy of canids and hyenids is one of low-search and high-pursuit, which might be expected of social predators according to the nature of their food resources (H-2). If sociality is relatively more prevalent in canids and hyenids because pursuit of prey is more effective by groups than by individuals, then it is a problem that the lion, like most felids basically a high-search and low-pursuit forager, is so social. Moreover, the cheetah relies more on pursuit of prey than any other felid, but it is less social than the lion and the social hyenid and canids.
