Emanoil, M.
Jaguar _Panthera onca_
1994  Book Chapter

The jaguar is the third largest living cat and the largest in North and South America. The color of its coat ranges from yellow-brown to auburn, with patterns of black spots and rosettes, many encircling a spot, and white underneath. Its fur may be black or white, but this occurrence is very rare. The average length of an adult jaguar is 4-6 ft (1.2-1.8 m); weight is approximately 75-250 lb (34-113 kg). The jaguar is a good swimmer, runner, and a tree climber and an opportunistic feeder. It feeds on aquatic animals, either fresh or carrion, including turtles, capybaras, iguanas, and fish, peccaries, monkeys, birds, dogs, and cattle. A solitary animal, it defends its chosen hunting territory, which is 4-27 sq mi (10-70 sq km) for the female and 8-80 sq mi (20-207 sq km) for the male.
