Tiger _Panthera tigris_
1994  Book Chapter

Very few animals, by the mere mention of their name, evoke such wonder, fear, and mystery in humans as the tiger. The protection of this magnificent animal has been an international conservation priority since the 1970s and yet it is still faced with extinction in the wild. There are perhaps 5,000-7,500 tigers left today, with most estimates at around 5,000 individuals - a population decline of 95 percent in this century. Once found across Asia from Siberia in the north, Turkey in the west, and Indonesia in the south, the tiger is now found in only a handful of locations.
