Toxic metals in selected traditional Chinese medicinals

Background: Although generally mild and safe, some traditionally Chinese medicine preparations have recently been shown to contain controlled substances and injurious levels of toxic alkaloids. Examination of herbal balls that allegedly contain endangered species products such as rhinoceros horn, tiger bone, and musk deer glandular secretions has revealed the presence of inorganic forms of mercury and arsenic.
