Ewer, R.F.
The evolution of mating systems in the Felidae
1974  Conference Proceeding

Ewer: If I'm right in looking at viverrids to represent what is fairly near to the original felid, we would expect an animal that is tropical and may well have a peak of breeding related to wet and dry seasons and the abundance of fruits for the rodents and birds which comprise the major prey. But the original mating pattern was probably not strictly seasonal. I'm sure strict seasonality is an adaptation to occupying areas away from the tropics.
