Run-over tiger may have been too sick to hunt | |
1998 Newspaper | |
Petaling Jaya, Tues: The tiger run over by an express bus on the Karak Highway near Bentong, Pahang, on Sunday night, may have been too weak and sick to catch prey, according to preliminary studies of its carcass. A post-mortem conducted by the National Parks and Wildlife Protection Department revealed the absence of bone material in the stomach and heavy presence of parasites in the intestines. Estimated to be about 20 years old, the cat weighed 130kg, was 1.7m long and 94.94cm high. Department personnel, who went to collect the carcass yesterday, found the eyes, tail, hind legs, tongue, jaw and testicles missing, pilfered by irresponsible people for their purported medicinal and aphrodisiac properties. The tiger is a protected animal under the Wildlife Act 1972 and anyone convicted of sport hunting or killing the animal or stealing its parts are liable to be fined up to RM15,000 or jailed up to five years. |
