Forestry in Malaysia is approaching a critical stage in its development. Timber harvesting is proceeding apace, often with political rather than environmental controls, and within a few decades will affect most remaining pristine rain forest areas. Yet the harvesting systems employed, even where long-lease agreements are in force and active management applied, have not been proven to be sustainable. |
