Scotland remains as one of the last strongholds in Europe of the forest form of the wildcat, but at the beginning of this century the wildcat had become almost extinct in Scotland, owing to persecution and habitat loss. However, the subsequent revival of the wildcat during the last 80 years may have been at the cost of an increasing loss of its genetic integrity through hybridisation with the domestic cat. |
