The Florida panther has recently suffered severe range and demographic contraction, leaving a remarkably low level of genetic diversity. This exerts a sever fitness cost, manifested by spermatozoal defects, cryprochidism, cardiac abnormalities and infectious diseases that threaten the survival of the subspecies.
