Recently expanding mammal species in the Czech Republic: distribution, abundance and legal status
2001  Beitr„ge zur Jagd- und Wildforschung (26): 111-125

In the second part of the 20th century, the spontaneous reappearance of several native mammal species (_Castor fiber_, _Canis_ _lupus_, _Lynx lynx_, _Ursus arctos_, _Alces alces_) occurred in the Czech Republic (CR). At the same time, several new non-native species (_Mustela vison_, _Nyctereutes procyonoides_, _Procyon lot_or) were recorded for the first time. In most cases, a large increase in abundance was recorded, apparently in relation to reintroduction efforts (_Castor fiber_; _Lutra lutra_, _Lynx lynx_). Currently, the occurrence of European beaver (_Castor fiber_) has been recorded in 14.3 % of the area of the CR, and it occurs regularly in 3.0 % of the country (Fig. 2). Beaver abundance probably exceeds 200-300 individuals and its population size is still increasing. American mink (_Mustela vison_) was recorded in 26.8 % of the CZ (Fig. 4), and the spread of this species is the most marked of all our mammals, although its abundance is not known. Otter (_Lutra lutra_) is found in 45.4 % of the country (Fig. 6) with a slight tendency to increase its range; its abundance is estimated at 700-800 individuals. Raccoon (_Procyon lotor_) is known from only 3.2 % of the CR (Fig. 8) and its abundance is unknown. Brown bear (_Ursus arctos_) is known from 11.3 % of the CR, but it is only found regularly in the mountains on the Slovak border (in 0.8 % of the CR: Fig. 9); bear abundance does not exceed 2-5 individuals. Wolf (_Canis lupus_) was recorded in 7.7 % of the country, hut is regularly reported only from the Moravskoslezske Beskydy Mts. (area = 1.0 %, Fig 10), and its abundance does not exceed 3 -1 0 individua1s. Raccoon clog (_Nyctereutes procyonoides_) was recorded in 61.5 % of area of the CR(Fig. 12) and this is increasing rapidly, however, its abundance is not known. Lynx (_Lynx lynx_) is known from 38.7 % of the CR, with its occurrence having been verified in 11.5 % (Fig. 15), but its rapid expansion phase has ended and its abundance is not increasing. Elk is known from 40.5 % of the CR, but has stable occurrence in 2.7 % (Fig. 17) with an estimated abundance of 50 individuals. It is not possible to exclude the existence of either the coypu (_Myocastor coypus_) or the reoccurrence of the wild cat (_Felis silvestris_) in the Czech fauna.
