Ongoing projects and research priorities on large carnivores in Latvia
2001 Conference Proceeding
Till the late 1990s, large carnivores were out of interest of researchers in Latvia. Both wolf and lynx were game species and the only information available on them was census data and hunting bag. In the middle 1990s, the number of predators increased significantly and in 1998 the first research project on wolf started ("Ecological background of wolf control"). Its aim was to find out the general status of the population (morphological data, sex ratio, diet etc.), investigating hunted animals. Considering that more than 300 wolves were hunted annually, we got a unique representativity of data. |
