Geographic Priorities for Jaguar Conservation
1999  El Jaguar en el nuevo milenio

The vast geographic range and ecological variability of the jaguar, Panthera onca, necessitates setting priorities for its conservation. Funds for jaguar conservation will always be limited, so we must carefully and scientifically select places for investment. In March 1999, the Wildlife Conservation Society, with support from Jaguar Cars, and in cooperation with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, sponsored the "Jaguars in the New Millennium" workshop to assess the status and distribution of jaguars across the range, and to develop geographic priorities to guide conservation of jaguars into the next millennium. Thirty of the world's experts on jaguars, drawn from across the geographic range, assembled in Coyococ, Mexico, to share data and insights on jaguar ecology and conservation and to develop geographic priorities to assure the long term survival of the jaguar.
