A Geographic Analysis of the Status and Distribution of Jaguars Across the Range

The jaguar, Panthera onca, is the third largest felid in the world and the largest carnivore in the New World (Seymour 1989). It has a broad geographic distribution and exploits a variety of habitats, including xeric formations, dry tropical forest, moist tropical forest, woodlands and savannas and grasslands (this volume). Historically, the jaguar ranged from the southern United States to southern Argentina (Guggisberg 1975, Swank and Teer 1989), however since 1900, its range has decreased considerably such that today it can be found only from northern Mexico to northern Argentina, with dispersing individuals occasionally found in the southern United States (Rabinowitz 1999, Lopez Gonzalez and Brown this volume.
