Hunting for an answer: Is Local Hunting Compatible with Large Mammal Conservation in India?
2000  Book Chapter

India is a country with high levels of biodiversity, particilary with respect to its large mammal fauna (Prater 1980, Johnsingh 1986; Rodgers and Panwar 1988). This diversity is a consequence of the following factors: (a) its location at the junction of the African, Palearctic, and Oriental zoogeographic realms (Rodgers and Panwar 1988); (b) great variations in climate and geology (Mani 1974; Puri et al. 1983); c) the establishment of government-protected forests dating back more than a century (Stebbing 1929); and (d) a traditionally tolerant conservation ethos (Gadgil and Malhotra 1985; Gadgil 1992).
