The last of the Javan tigers disappeared in the 1970s. Seidensticker (1987) bore witness to the death throes of the subspecies, which was down to three to four individuals, and found it difficult to isolate any single factor that pushed it over the brink. Once tigers are down to such small numbers, environmental factors, demographic stochasticity, or genetic deterioration (Burgman _et al._ 1993) will surely push them over the edge. |
