Iberian lynx (_Lynx pardinus_) distribution and current conservation status in Spain, 2000-2002. Report summary
2002  Conference Proceeding

The Conservation Strategy for the Iberian lynx (February 1999) contemplates the necessity to carry out a study to solve the insufficient knowledge on the distribution and abundance of the species, data necessary for the design and adoption of conservation measures. This was the main objective of the present study. In 2002, only 24 UTM 10x10 km grids with Iberian lynx presence have been located using scat analysis or camera-traps. Only in 5 of these 24 grids reproduction had been detected. All our data suggest that less than 200 lynx survive in two different breeding populations, Do¤ana area (30-35 individuals, with 3-5 reproductive females) and And£jar-Carde¤a (90-120 individuals, with around 25 reproductive females).
