Inventory and monitoring of the lion population of the Zakouma National Park
2004  Full Book

Once widespread throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, the lion is now mainly confined to sub-Saharan Africa. The former "king of animals" is now classified as "vulnerable" by the IUCN1. With an estimated population of between 1,800 and 2,800 according to Bauer and Van Der Merwe (2004) and between 3,000 and 4,900 individuals according to Chardonnet (2002), the populations of Central and West Africa are particularly threatened. The Lion Zakouma Study, which began in April 2003, is part of the European CURESS3. The main objective of the project is to improve the sustainable management of natural resources in the Zakouma National Park (PNZ) and its periphery, as well as the conservation of its environmental heritage. It aims to gain a better understanding of the lion population and their chances of survival in the Zakouma National Park, and focuses its efforts on the following objectives: - Identifying the lion population in eastern PNZ4 - Analysis and comparison of the spatial distribution of lions and their prey in the eastern zone; - Collection of health status data; - The proposal of methods to reduce human-predator conflicts; - Training of a locally recruited assistant in lion population monitoring.
