Depredation of domestic animals by large cats in Brazil
2003  Natureza & Conserva‡Æo (1): 71-73

The mortality of jaguar (_Panthera onca_) and puma (_Puma concolor)_ inflicted by ranchers as a way to control the depredation of domestic animals is presently one of the main factors responsible for the reduction of remaining populations of these species in Brazil. The alleged increase of jaguar population in Pantanal in recent years, sometimes divulged in national and local press, has contributed for the false impression that the species is far from being endangered. In fact, except for the time when the jaguar was hunted for its fur to international markets, there probably has never been so much killing of individuals.
