Sixty-two jaguars have been reportedly killed or captured in the American Southwest since 1900. Some of these reports, especially those prior to 1925, are described only in personal correspondence or in a single newspaper article and are difficult to substantiate. At least seven jaguars in Arizona were deposited in museum collections; however, and many of the more recent killings were described in detail, often in more than one publication. As a result we have been able to locate parts or photographs of 22 jaguars from Arizona and New Mexico. All of the materials seen by us were of _Panthera onca_ and the 62 accounts (Appendix 1) are assumed to be of naturally occurring jaguars. |
