Thalen, D.C.P.
The caracal lynx (_Caracal caracal schmitzi_) in Iraq. Earlier and new records, habitat and distribution
2005  Bull.Nat.Hist.Res.Center (6): 1-23

The desert areas of Iraq provide a clear example of changing environmental conditions that lead to extinction of plant and animal species. Within a few decades, a number of species has become completely or almost extinc. animal species as oryx (_Orxy leucoryx_), cheetah (_Acinonyx jubatus_) and gazelles are well known examples. Information such as adequate description of distribution and ecology and habitat requirement is not easily available for the fauna in Iraq. One species on which almost all information is lacking is the Caracal. This paper presents some older and some more recent records of the caracal in Iraq.
