Predation and feeding habits of the Eurasian lynx (_Lynx lynx_) in Slovenian Dinaric Mountains | |
2006 Full Book | |
In the present thesis the role of the Eurasian lynx in the forest ecosystems of the Dinaric Mts. in Slovenia has been investigated. The diet of lynx, its hunting and killing behaviour, course of prey consumption, as well as characteristics and spatial distribution of the kill sites were studied with the use of snow-tracking, scat analysis, examination of prey remains, and radio-telemetry. The important aims of the study were also to verify the hypothesis that lynx selectively kills particular individuals within individual pery species, to determine which species of the scavenger guild feed on lynx's kills, and to estimate their impact on lynx's predation rate. According to the results the roe deer (_Capreolus capreolus_) and the red deer (_Cervus elaphus_) are the most important pres species for the lynx in the region, comprising on average approx. 64% and 24% of total consumed biomass, respectively. However, considerable differences were noticed among different parts of the study area with different densities of prey species. In contrast to most of the other studied areas throughout Europe a relatively high proportion of fat dormous (_Glis glis_) was noticed in the lynx diet, comprising approx. 10% of total consumed biomass. among ungulates lynx preferentially killed animals in poor condition. In larger species a selection toward females and younger animals was observed. |
