Expert opinion on the situation of the wildcat (Felis silvestris Schreiber, 1777) in the whole of Hesse
2004  Full Book

In this work, the state of knowledge on the distribution of the wildcat in Hessen, Germany, was updated. 760 findings were collected by means of a state wide questionnaire survey, extensive literature research and an inquiry of wild cat experts for the period after 1980. Currently, the main distribution areas are located in peripheral forest rich upland regions: Nordosthessen, Spessart, Taunus and Rothaargebirge. From other areas, only single observations are known. Compared with another survey from 1986, the wild cat seems to have expanded its range. The wild cat occurrence in Hessen is situated centrally between two strongly isolated populations in Middle Europe and is thus of great importance for a large-scale connection between the populations in Central Germany (Thringen, Niedersachsen) and the one in Western Germany and France. The main threats for the wildcat are habitat fragmentation and road traffic.
