Can large carnivores survive?
2001  Conference Proceeding

Conflict between people and large carnivores goes back to early human times. It became tense when people settles and kept livestock. Large predators were largely exterminates in western Europe, and Europeans continued to fight them elsewhere in the world. The overall impact of predators on livestock is actually small, but some livestock owners can suffer catastrophic losses. Recently, large carnivores have been reintroduces in North America and western Europe. However, controversy between livestock owners and advocates of the predators is strong. Nevertheless, large carnivores can survive and coexist with people if sufficient space exists, although small subpopulations of carnivores may still be at risk.
