1990  Journal of Wildlife Diseases (26): 392-394

Lions (_Panthera leo_) and cheetah (_Acinonyx jubatus_) from the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Tanzania were examined for the presence of blood protozoans. Twenty-eight percent of the lions were infected with _Trypanosoma_ sp. and the prevalence of trypanosome infection varied significantly between adjacent habitats. All of the animals were infected with _Hepatozoon_ sp. and a _Theileria_ sp.-like piroplasm that was morphologically indistinguishable from _Theileria felis_.
